voracious • (adjective)
\vaw-RAY-shuss\
hear it again
1 : having a huge appetite : ravenous
2 : very eager
Example sentence:
Swim-team practice always makes Hunter voracious, and afterwards he usually eats two or three helpings at dinner.
Etymology:
Voracious eaters tend to devour food, so it's no surprise that "voracious" traces to a Latin word meaning "to devour." "Voracious" isn't always about eating, though. It can also describe someone who is very enthusiastic about something. For example, a "voracious reader" loves to read and just "devours" books! By the way, "vorare" also puts the "vor" in other eating-related words such as "carnivorous" (which means "feeding on animal tissues"), "granivorous" (which means "feeding on seeds or grain"), "herbivorous" (which means "feeding on plants"), and "omnivorous" (which means "feeding on both animal and plant substances").
